Places to visit
Sittong - called the land of orange, tea gardens and orchids, is comprised of the higher reaches of the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. It is covered in dense green forests that is home to a vast number of rare Himalayan flora and fauna. You can trek through the forest trails and spend time exploring the entire Sittong area, filled with pine forests, waterfalls and tea gardens. On a clear sunny day, you will be delighted with visits from various brightly coloured wild birds and butterflies fluttering around you. You can spend a day just relaxing, sipping on a cup of warm organic tea, sourced from the nearby tea gardens and immersing yourself in the beauty of the place.
You can also take a day or two sight seeing in and around Sittong to visit famous spots such as Ahaldara, Namthing Pokhri, Jogighat, the Mahananda wildlife sanctuary, the orange gardens and nearby monastries. Ahaldara is famous for its view point, where you can get a 360 degree view of the entire Kanchenjunga range on one side while you can get a glimpse of the river Teesta flowing below through the valley below. It is the perfect spot for catching a sunrise or sunset with a warm cup of tea and some snacks. As you walk down from the view point, you can also visit the famous Cinchona plantations on both sides of the road, which is used to extract Quinine - a treatment for Malaria. Namthing Pokhri is an ancient lake surrounded by dense pine forests, also famous for spotting the Himalayan Salamanders - an almost extinct species now.
Whether you decide to spend a few days here or a few weeks, you will not run out of things to do and places to visit here.
